Forgotten daughter
I feel so unfortunate to see myself as a helpless brother. A brother who can't see my sister during depawali, celebrate my special brothers day with my sister. Can't wish her on her birthday.
To my father her daughter is forgotten as we hardly get in contact through phone calls. I found she is doing great with her love life and financially too. But as a family, we never spend time together.
This happened 15 years back, when I was just nine years, my sister fell in love with a guy who was so crazy in love with my sister. I still remember when he used to bring lots of sweets and biscuits to me, so that my sister would get pleased at it. It happened a month later. He might have seen whole life with her already, that he was dying to get my sister. Sometimes, I was as messenger and sometime as a mediator. No matter what I had this huge commission as sweets. As a nine year old guy what would be more important than to see smiles on my sister's face.
Then they fell in love, enjoyed the most beautiful time together. Sometimes my sister use to sneak out of the house telling me to make various fake reasons where she went. They were inseparable, after two years of relation, people came to know about their relationship but my parents were yet to know.
One day, when she decided to marry him then they realize the not everything was easy as it seems to be. She decided to run away with him leaving the last note to my parents saying that she is marrying her boyfriend and me to study well.
Well, I never realize that she will never return after that.
My father wanted to get her and drag her home. Tell that she is not allowed to marry that guy because he is from a low caste. So, he kept on asking me where they went. He even went to police station that her daughter is lost. But couldnot find.
Some months later, we received a letter stating she is doing fine and wants to marry the guy she love. After that, there was pressure from the villagers to out caste her. If we donot do, then our whole family is going to get out casted. Out caste means no one from the community will attend our rituals or any kind of ceremony and no one will come for help nor they will invite us for village occasions. In a way we will be left alone. Well, my father donot wanted this, so as per the culture and tradition my sister was out casted. In a way that my sister is same as dead, because the dead ritual is done to out caste.
After a year, my sister used to call us and tell that she wants to visit home at least once. But my father with hidden tears in his eyes rejected every call and request.
It so happened that one day, my sister and the son in law visted our home. Although she brough a lot of gifts, my father flatly rejected and was not allowed to enter inside the house. Then she gently hugged me and left with tears in her eyes.
She left, never to see her again. I hope someday god will help me find her. This time I am not going to care about any caste or society norms.
Note:
Its a Fiction story but this might have happened in someone's life due to caste system that our community becomes the law without knowing why this is happening. A system that has divided the family instead of union. System that has limited our choices on who to have in our lives. Its time we change our mentality and time to grow. Love should happen between two person irrespective of caste or any background.
