Part 1: My grandpa’s love story
A ten-year-old me would have always thought that brightest stars are grandparents. As they are no more in this world.
My grandpa was so innocent that he couldn’t claim his share from his father’s property. When his elder brother took all the share when their father was no more. So, he settled at the next village buying some arable land. It was more than 10 acres land which he bought in Nu 500. It was the best price fetched in those times. It was well enough for the new couple to settle with the new home. He might have got some cattle as a share from his father’s property.
It was new couple recently married. But let me take it from the beginning. How the story of the couple started.
It was once upon a time when my grandpa was at his late 20s. it was time for him to find a spouse to take care of the household chores. Those times people never wanted to draw themselves in an unwanted marriage and regret later, so before the boy is ready for the marriage he would show to the palmist to see the future prospect with the chosen girl. But my grandpa has not even made a mind which girl to marry. When a palmist saw his palm. He said “my son, there is no fate for you to marry a young unmarried girl (kumari/vergin)” he said, “you will either have to steal someone’s wife or you will have to marry a widow.” My grandpa would have thought that he will never steal someone’s wife for him. One day he set his mind that he will go in search of widow. He was even given the direction in which way to go and he was give the sign that where my grandpa would find his love.
As per the direction given by the palmist he was to go to the east and find the house facing toward a huge river or a huge cliff. So, he set a journey to the east (Gelephu). During those time my grandpa neither had umbrella or a watch that would attract a girl as those items would easily attract a girl. Especially if you have camera and a watch or you are with a Gogo shoe (shoe with high heels) it would be a plus point for any girl to fall in love. My grandpa did not have any of them.
He took a good amount under his half pant which he wore from inside because at any time thieves may enter the train to loot people. Underpants are not worn in those days, usually people wore two half pants at a time and money is best safe in inside half-pant. Anyhow he reached to the east presently in Gelephu side safely. Luckily, he knows some of the people from the east where he asked help from. Those people might have taken to the north from Gelephu towards Bhur where he encounters with a story of a girl who lost her husband and remained as a widow for last two years.
My grandpa presumed that she could be his spouse but another prediction of the palmist was also need to fulfill as her house should be facing either a huge river or a cliff. My grandpa has already enquired enough knowledge about the girl. She had no child and her husband was lost in the flood by khar khola river. Her husband had settled his cattle heard nearby river and one night the flood swept everyone living none alive.
After an extensive search about the girl and her house, one fine day my grandpa met her. It was exactly matching the prediction made by the palmist. There was a huge cliff at a kilometer distance where the house was facing towards the cliff. Well my grandpa could not wait much longer, when the girl came to fetch water down the stream he instantly proposed to marry him.
So true was the words in those times when a man promises a girl to love her and marry, it truly means because promises were never broken in those times. Although my grandfather did not tell my uncle any account of how he proposed my grandmother I am pretty sure that he wasn’t romantic and he might never have sung any songs or told a poetic verse to make a girl fall in love. As far as I came to know that my grandfather was energetic and smart where my grandma felt in love instantly.
It was a tradition in those times that when a girl and boy fall in love, arrange marriage was hardy seen unlike these days, the girl would flee with the boy packing her cloths without the notice of her parents. Then after three days the boy’s family would come to confess that girl is with them and they would prepare for the marriage ceremony.
The next day my grandpa with his crew fled with the girl and descended towards Gelephu. I think there was some villain on the way where my grandfather had to encounter some boys who teased his girl, fight nearly broke but my grandma had developed much love for she was now unable to leave him whatever other people said about him.
They hold a night at Gelephu and the next morning they went through Dadhgari (border town of Gelephu) and later caught the train towards Hasimara. On the way in one train station, my grandfather nearly lost his love. He was out to buy some food for her and the train started to move, that was where he lost in which container he had left his new love. He started to run with the train, not knowing which one to catch. Without knowing which train to hold he just randomly entered one container. Luckily, he found his love waiting for him. He nearly lost her on the way.
Well this was not the end, although he had a successful marriage with Ghalley tradition.
